#MakanReview : Pizza Plus, Bandar Sri Permaisuri

The place was quite deserted when we went for dinner; only 2 other tables were occupied. And oh! Parking can be quite tricky in this area.

My first comment : the waiter (who I assume is the owner) was pretty rude.

It's not like the place was packed with customers. Believe me when I say, if my mother was there, he'll surely get a handful from my mom. The waiter practically condescended us when we ordered plain water. Excuse us for wanting to cut down on calories. Bad, bad service. His face expression throughout our meal there, urghhhh.

And the service was quite slow too.

Wild Mushroom Ravioli
RM19.90
Okay, this definitely did not look appetizing, but it is the bomb! For this alone I'll rate 5/5. The portion was so small tho. RM20 for 6 raviolis. Whattttt... I'm gonna need 2 - 3 plates to be fully satisfied. 😂 Frankly speaking, I don't mind if they charge the customers RM40 for this, provided that the portion is huge. Because taste wise, it's amazing!

Creme Brulee
RM9.50
The taste was delicious. I just wish they served it like the way it's supposed to be; cold custard with torched sugar. It was at room temperature, fyi.

Hawaiian Pizza
RM20.90
I may be an adventurous eater, but my all time favorite pizza has always been pizza with chicken and pineapple (never understood the debate on pineapple and pizza LOL).

To tell the truth, this is not my favorite. Not enough marinara, I could do with a lil bit more chicken pieces and the sauce on top just terrible. It's BBQ sauce! I've read rave reviews on its pizza. Maybe I ordered the wrong one.

Below are the latest menu. All the reviews I saw online shared the old one. Apologies for the bad quality hahahaha.

Apparently, I'm not the only one having issues with the waiter/owner. I'm sharing some of the less favorable comments I found online.

My verdict ; inconsistent food quality. Some are amazing, others not so much. What I can be sure is, their service is terrible! But, but! The pasta was one of the best pasta I've had (which says a lot since I've had pasta in Italy before). So, I might just turn a blind eye on the rudeness and visit this place again 😂

#MakanReview : Beard Brothers BBQ, Tropicana

If you know me at all, you'll know that my favorite tv channel is Food Network. So my days are often filled with Guy Fieri and Adam Richman. They shared about Texas BBQ a lot in their shows! So it's like a dream come true that finally there is a halal version in Malaysia. Dubbed as the best barbecue in KL, I gotta visit Beard Brothers.

We knew before coming in that the price is gonna be steep. No surprise there. The place is quite small, at the corner of the building with no AC (take note).

We each ordered this.
Texas Star (100g beef brisket + mashed potatoes + coleslaw + chips + bun + can drinks) RM26
Add on 100g pulled lamb RM22
Add on beef sausage RM10

All in all, the bill come up to nearly RM150.

Is it worth it? Not for me. I'll lay down my reason and reviews below.
  • Beef brisket : Personally, I don't like the seasoning; it was bland. It was overdone and too soft for my liking [it took the team 20 hours to prep and cook the meat], definitely juicy, but not flavorful. Get what I mean?
  • Pulled lamb : Thank God, there was some chewiness to this. I'm a total sucker for lamb and this... Mehhhh
  • Beef sausage : The best out of the lot. Flavorful and juicy.
  • Mashed potato and Coleslaw : so-so only. Nothing to shout about.
  • Bread and chips : stale
  • For the amount I paid, the portion was very small. And it's not even good!

My conclusion : overpriced and overhyped.

Rating : 2/5

#MakanReview : Udon Thani, Kg Pandan

'Have Halal Will Travel' did a write up and video review on this restaurant. Obviously, it looked so good that we went to Kg Pandan and try em.

For a restaurant with that glowing of a review, I was quite surprised to find it quite empty.

Turns out to be a very simple restaurant, nearby Mat Rock Ayam Goreng Kunyit; if you're familiar with the area. But hey, as long as the food is good, I don't mind.

Spoiler alert! I'm super super critical when it comes to Thai food especially when the restaurant is said to serve authentic Thai dishes 👀

Pad Krapow
RM8.90
Here's my problem with it (you know it's bad when I start to list things down 😂)
  • The most important element of pad krapow is the krapow (Thai holy basil). It has a distinct fragrant smell and taste than can't be substituted. Obviously, it's missing here. So can it be called pad krapow after all? I don't think so.
  • The choice of vegetable. Carrot and long beans? Really? Really??
  • To top it off, it lacks the 'kick' and taste. It was downright bland.
  • Prad krapow is always, always served with a sunny side up egg. Ohh the creamy yolk complement the dish so much. But here, you got your typical fried egg.
Just in case you're interested to know what authentic pad krapow looks like;

Green Curry Laksa
RM4.90

If I had to choose a single dish that I'll be eating forever, it will be this! It's quite difficult to get a good bowl of laksa here in KL since the laksa itself is quite difficult to find. My mom got her laksa from Pasar Besar Selangor but it depends on supply, too.

My verdict of Udon Thani's version? Disappointing. It does not have enough 'heat', very little laksa and chicken bits (trust me, I need to support the laksa on the chopstick in order for it to be visible. Otherwise, you can only see the green curry broth and veges). What puzzled me the most was the broth which reeks of tumeric. The smell was so strong!

Mango Sticky Rice
RM6.90

The mango was not sweet which I can still tolerate. But the sticky rice was so bad! It was too wet and mushy. And sesame seeds? Really? In the case of authentic Thai mango sticky rice, toasted mung beans should be used.

Roasted Beef
RM11.90

One, they are not using premium beef cuts; I can tell. Then how do you justify the price? Two, I was expecting at least a little bit of charred beef. Daging bakar, kan? Not to mention it was super chewy. I don't know. I just don't dig it.

Cha Yen
RM4
It looked so good and 'kow', right? But it's not. Hahaha

So my final rating for the place is 1/5.
Not worth the travel to eat there.
And even if you're there, fell free to eat elsewhere 😂

Trust me, your half-Thai food reviewer.
